Organisation is a skill that is learned and comes easily to some but requires more effort for others. If you are considering ways to improve your own organisation skills, consider how it would improve your life. You can read about the benefits of an organised home here.

Here we have compiled a list of 10 tips to help you on your journey to an organised home:

  1. Store a bag or box to gather items to discard

By having space to immediately put items that require you to action later, you can efficiently keep on top of clothing that has been grown out of or electronics that are broken beyond repair, or items that you no longer need. When you have the time you can sort through these items and rehome, recycle, repurpose or dispose of them.

2. Look closely at how a guest sees your home

By stepping back and imagining the space as someone who has never seen it, you can see the clutter which has become a fixture in your home.

3. Limit space

By allowing a box for craft supplies or a shelf for spices, you are able to limit the items coming into your home and keep clutter under control.

4. Make informed decisions, quickly

When organising your home you need to be able to make decisions on what you will keep, what you will use as storage solutions, how you will label items and how you will dispose of unwanted items. All these decisions can take a long time if you are not strict with yourself.

5. Review Regularly

If a space is becoming messy quickly or if you are finding it takes too long to put items back into a space after use, consider that the original plan of how the items are stored may need tweaking.

6. Don’t shop until you drop

Purge your items to only those that you need or love before spending lots of money and time on getting storage solutions. There is a theory that we only use 20% of the possessions we own. Try to ensure that every item you own serves a purpose. Once you only have what you really need and love, then start to plan how to store those items.

7. A home for everything and everything in its place

Make life easy by giving every item you own its own home to speed up tidying and find things easily.

8. Buy a Lazy Susan

If you find bottles, jars or toiletries can easily be lost in a deep cupboard, buy a Lazy Susan to store those items on and spin that back into view when you need them!

9. Apply the one in one out rule

After spending time carefully selecting just what you need or love, don’t allow the clutter to build up again. Set limits like one item into your home means one item must leave. It really makes you consider purchases more carefully!

10. Label everything

Use labels to remind you where you put things but also show guests or others how you expect items to be stored and kept.
